The background of National Day of Rock ‘n’ Roll

In 2020, Christina Alexander established National Day of Rock ‘n’ Roll to honour the popular musical genre. Rock ‘n’ roll’s origins and history are a matter of debate among musical historians; however, the majority concur that it draws from African musical tradition and European instruments. No matter the history, critics concur that Rock ‘n’ Roll, later known as Rock music, gave birth to legendary greats such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Bono, and Jon Bon Jovi, who have all left their mark.

Country music and rhythm and blues influenced the development of rock and roll. Initially, the main instruments were saxophone or piano. Later, in the 1950s, the guitar took over, and further down the line, two electric guitars were the norm. Despite the predominance of Black Americans in the genres from which it evolved, White Americans dominated rock ‘n’ roll. The first recorded song was published in 1951, and the first Rock ‘n’ Roll concert was organised by the legendary DJ Alan Freed in 1952. Although the genre was not officially recognised until 1954, its cultural impact was profound, influencing fashion, language, attitudes, and way of life.

In addition to the electric guitar and drums, the amplifier and microphone, and the 45 rpm record, technological advancements at the time also contributed to its rise in prominence. The emergence of independent record labels altered the record industry, and radio stations were eager to broadcast music for music-hungry listeners. The Beatles (1960), Nirvana (1987), and Queen (1970) were among the first rock groups to exploit the electronic potential of their instruments as a result of these developments.
