A random act of compassion can have a greater effect than you might expect. Your decision to hold a door open for a stranger or return a lost pocketbook may be the recipient's only good fortune of the day.
On October 5, National Do Something Nice Day, make your friends and family grin. This holiday inspires us to conduct acts of kindness for both strangers and loved ones. It’s easy to become so caught up in our own stresses and struggles that we neglect to demonstrate kindness to others. This holiday is a wonderful reminder that doing positive deeds makes the world a better place, and may also help you better manage your own problems. So rejoice with us!
A random act of compassion can have a greater effect than you might expect. Your decision to hold a door open for a stranger or return a lost pocketbook may be the recipient’s only good fortune of the day. This person may have been feeling more lonely than ever or losing faith in the kindness of the world for all we know. A modest act of kindness on your part may alter that person’s worldview, which is quite potent! Multiple studies have shown that assisting others benefits you as well.
Giving back to the community or performing a good deed can stimulate a surge of feel-good chemicals by stimulating the brain’s pleasure center. Scientists are uncertain as to why kindness feels so good, but it has been theorized that prehistoric humans developed the desire to assist others to ensure the survival of their social group. Helping others is a fundamental aspect of who we are! Small acts of kindness are an excellent method to remind ourselves that we can make a difference. It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of the world’s many troubles, but every single one of us can make at least a modest impact on someone else’s life. This is an extraordinary sensation.
Participate in a local organization in the community. Consider your strongest skills and how you can use them to assist others if you are having difficulty deciding where or how to volunteer. If you are skilled in construction, you should volunteer with Habitat for Humanity. If you are a web developer, offer your coding skills to a charitable organization in need of a website redesign or teach programming fundamentals to local children. There are charity kitchens and homeless shelters in most communities that are always in need of kind, compassionate individuals.
Afford a stranger a modest act of kindness to demonstrate your concern. Pay the coffee shop bill of the individual behind you in line. If you see a person weeping alone in public, offer them a tissue or, if necessary, some other form of assistance. If someone thanks you for a good deed, ask them to repay you by helping another person in need when the time is appropriate. Whatever the case, continue to disseminate goodwill!
Call someone you care about out of the blue to express your appreciation for them. It might even enhance their day! If you know someone going through a difficult period, check in with them and let them know you’re thinking about them. If possible, send them a bouquet or deliver a home-cooked meal. Your personalized attention can make a world of difference.
