The background of National Friendship Day

Humans are the most social creatures on earth; as Abraham Maslow revealed in his Hierarchy of Human Needs, we require relationships with others. Our sociological requirements motivate our behaviour, urging us to form interpersonal relationships and establish deeper connections with others. It is not surprising that we celebrate an entire holiday based on the value of friendship, given that our need for human connection extends beyond our romantic partners.

National Friendship Day originated in the 1930s as a marketing strategy for Hallmark Cards. Joyce Hall, the day’s founder, established that it would take place on August 2 and that it would be a day to honour those closest to you by sending them greeting cards. When the U.S. Congress designated the first Sunday in August as National Friendship Day in 1935, the holiday quickly grew in significance.

In 1998, the United Nations designated Winnie-the-Pooh as the world’s Ambassador of Friendship. During their 65th session in 2011, the United Nations designated July 30 as International Friendship Day.

Today, National Friendship Day is observed on the first Sunday of August. Thanks to technological advancements, it is simpler to stay in contact with friends, share with them, and express gratitude for them.

This August 2, commemorate the partner you create and share with your chosen family — the friends who help you through difficult times and cheer you on during your greatest achievements.
