Anyone who likes sports can celebrate National Jersey Friday with a group hug and wear their shirts with pride.

THE HISTORY OF FRIDAY THE 13TH

‘Jersey’ comes from the island of Jersey in the English Channel, where people have knitted for a long time and where the first sportswear was made. German dancers were the first ones to join. A long time ago, they wore gray linen uniforms. But by the 1890s, cotton shirts were more popular. People had to be able to tell each other apart in team sports, so they dyed their shirts different colors and sewed on numbers and symbols. At the Olympics in 1896, players from the same country competed in different clothes. In time for the 1908 London Games, all athletes had to wear the same clothes, and the word “jersey” was used for the first time in a sportswear context. Before polyester, nylon, and lycra became popular in the 1930s, the first sports shirts were made from cotton or wool. It was hard to wear the first synthetic jerseys, but by the 1970s, they were the most famous and thought to be perfect for sports.

Before 1970, sports teams didn’t really start to make a personality for themselves or take the idea of selling their shirts seriously. In 1975, the English football team Leeds United was the first to design shirts that fans could buy as copies. After seeing how well it worked, other clubs did the same thing, but they added logos from makers and made the shirts look better. German team Eintracht Braunschweig was the first to sign a deal to put a sponsor’s name on the front of their shirts. This made jerseys even more popular. By the 1980s and 1990s, almost all important clubs had signed these kinds of deals. This made sponsorships more valuable, especially for bigger teams. The North American Soccer League was the first league in the U.S. to try putting players’ names on their shirts and giving each player a squad number.

The National Football League Players Association started the day so that fans could wear their team outfits and get to know each other better. Today is National shirt Friday, so wear the shirt of your favorite sports player. You can wear it at home, at work, to school, or out to eat.
