On June 22, National Kissing Day is all about expressing your affection and enhancing your health. Indeed, hugging is beneficial for your health — #wellness. Kissing alleviates tension, burns calories, and boosts the immune system. We cannot conceive of a reason why anyone would not want to celebrate, so pucker up!
Kissing is a form of communication today. It is used to express affection and in some cultures as a salutation. The prevalent theory regarding the evolution of the kiss is based on our natural instinct to share food, which is comparable to how many mammals nurture their young.
Since then, historians have concluded that the earliest references to kissing originated in India, with four significant Vedic Sanskrit texts referencing the alleged earliest forms of kissing. These texts from 1500 BCE define ‘kissing’ as the act of touching and pressing the noses together.
By the time of Alexander the Great’s army in 326 B.C., kissing had become commonplace. After Alexander’s death, his army dispersed, as did the ritual of kissing.
The Romans popularised the greeting, and as the proverb goes, “do as the Romans do.” We will disregard the phrase “when in Rome” because they have spread their knowledge of kissing around the globe.
Back then, kissing was used to express affinity, and only a “French” kiss indicated passion. Ancient Roman law stated that if a virgin was ardently kissed in public, she was entitled to full marriage rights — the Romans were serious.
Today, you can see couples kissing everywhere without all the scandal, which is why we have an entire day to celebrate!

Try something different than your typical greeting or high-five that is inspired by European culture. Choose to kiss those you encounter today on both cheeks. Certainly, they’ll believe you’re quite sophisticated, but we wouldn’t recommend trying this on your boss.
Don’t they say that practise makes perfect? You’ve mastered the art of kissing, but who says you can’t have a little joy with it? Alternate your everyday greeting with a French kiss, butterfly kiss, or hand kiss with a curtsy.
If you would rather not participate in the kissing festivities, there is no harm in viewing a romantic film alone or with friends. Attempt to locate “The Kiss” to see where everything began!
With millions of nerve endings, your lips are extremely sensitive to external factors such as the weather.
Lips have three to six layers of skin, compared to 16 layers in other areas of the body, meaning blood vessels are more visible and alter the skin’s colour.
Different cultures consider the lips to be sexual organs.
As collagen production declines with age, so does the volume of the lips.
To purse your lips, you must contract the orbicularis oris, a group of four muscles.
