It is difficult to determine who created National Knife Day or when, but it appears that the holiday has been observed since 2011. The knife is one of the earliest known instruments that was created out of a necessity for survival.
On National Knife Day, August 24, we honour one of the earliest instruments used by humans. Today is Knife Appreciation Day, a day to honour the knives we use every day. Knives have historically been crafted from bone, stone, and flint, and they are currently manufactured from titanium, bronze, iron, and steel. We use knives for a variety of purposes, including cooking, dining, fishing, and hunting. The day is commemorated by demonstrating your slicing prowess, purchasing a new set of knives, and even comparing and exchanging blades with other knife enthusiasts. National Knife Day is a celebration for everyone who has ever used the tool, regardless of whether they are a proficient fisherman or chef.
It is difficult to determine who created National Knife Day or when, but it appears that the holiday has been observed since 2011. The knife is one of the earliest known instruments that was created out of a necessity for survival. Initially, knives were employed as primitive instruments for digging and construction, as weapons, and for hunting, fishing, and food collection. It was common for prehistoric humans to possess a knife at all times, unlike today. During the late Lithic periods, sharpened stone tools became increasingly sophisticated, allowing for the creation of the first blades. During the Copper and Bronze Ages, metal blades emerged, rapidly replacing stone swords. However, these blades were not as durable as those that came before them.
During the Iron Age, instruments became more robust and resilient. Iron knives were succeeded by steel blades, and since then they have remained relatively unchanged. Today, blades made from iron alloys are the most prevalent, but cobalt alloys and titanium are also popular options. Earlier swords lacked a distinct handle and blade. For decorative and practical purposes, bone, wood, and metal began to be carved into handles. Wood is one of the most commonly used materials for knife handles today. With the invention of folding blades, there has also been a development of a separate handle. Knives serve a variety of functions in modern society. We use knives for food preparation and consumption, medical purposes, and carving. There are numerous types of kitchen knives, including chef’s knives, utility knives, paring knives, and bread knives. Almost anyone can afford the majority of knives, but there are high-end custom knives that cost $400 or more!
