The origin of lace, a delicate fabric created by weaving yarn into a web-like structure, can be traced to Italy. The word ‘lace’ is derived from the Latin term ‘Laqueus,’ which means ‘to entice.’ We concur that there is no fabric more regal and alluring than delicate, handcrafted lace.

In the earlier days of lacemaking, experiments with gold, silver, and linen fibers were common. In the 15th century, the art of making lace with silver and copper wire was revered. Lace was introduced to England in the mid-1500s as a result of Queen Elizabeth I’s close ties to France. Cotton thread lace dominated the market and collections after the industrialization of textiles.

Once required to be taught in Belgian institutions, lacemaking has traveled a great distance. Priests, the Duchess of Milan, Queen Victoria, and North American seamstresses all donned lace and pushed the mantel forward while wearing it.

The origins of this holiday are unknown, but its purpose is crystal apparent. On October 1, we celebrate the rich history of lacemaking by donning our finest lace costumes.
