National Mad Hatter Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Recently, have you felt repressed or even depressed? If so, gather your party hats and horns because it’s time for a very odd celebration. On October 6, National Mad Hatter Day, it is acceptable to spew milk out of your nose. Celebrate with an all-day festival of silliness designed specifically for those who want to don wacky top hats and walk backwards. Impress Lewis Carroll.

The background of National Mad Hatter Day

Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” is the 19th-century equivalent of “Bizarro World.” Carroll’s 1865 novel follows a precocious seven-year-old girl down a rabbit hole and into a world of Cheshire cats that vanish, babies that turn into piglets, and a queen who chops off heads. The Mad Hatter’s absurd tea party is both enticing and terrifying, much like an early version of Groundhog Day, with a dormouse crammed daily into a teacup.

In Carroll’s book, the eccentric hostess of tea parties is simply called “Hatter.” However, “mad as a hatter” was a staple of British slang for nearly three decades. During the 18th and 19th centuries, hatmakers utilized mercury nitrate as part of the process for curing felt. As we now know, mercury poisoning can manifest as eccentric-appearing symptoms such as impaired speech, drooling, and diarrhea. The person’s behavior resulted in the phrase “mad as a hatter.” National Mad Hatter Day brings out the humor in everyone.

The Mad Hatter views the world as a never-ending tea party, complete with enticing biscuits, eccentric visitors, and arbitrary rules. In an era of increasing partisanship and rigidity, the Mad Hatter invites us all to wear whatever we want, do whatever we want, and share tea and pastries with whoever we want. “Alice in Wonderland” was animated by Walt Disney as part of a sequence of short films titled “Alice in Slumberland.” As a threat to public health, the U.S. Public Health Service prohibited the felt industry from continuing to use mercury. Prior to the mid-1960s, American males were almost never seen in public without a hat. However, by the middle of the decade, hats with brims began to disappear as a fashion staple.

After seeing Sir John Tenniel’s original illustrations of the Mad Hatter in “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” a group of computer programmers petitioned for a national day of recognition. Lewis Carroll would be astonished to learn that his Hatter has endured for more than 150 years, as depicted by Johnny Depp in “Alice Through the Looking Glass” (2016) and “Alice in Wonderland” (2010).

Activities commemorating National Mad Hatter Day

Perform or reread passages from the text.

Check with your local library to see if any National Mad Hatter Day activities are planned. If not, offer to organize a Mad Hatter’s tea party recreation with a group of children. If you don’t want to act out the tea party, why not let children discover something amazing in literature by reading sections aloud? Or, you can simply relax with a cup of tea and relive the adventure of following the White Rabbit into Wonderland by retracing his steps.

Enjoy a marathon of ridiculous films.

National Mad Hatter Day is an ideal occasion for watching silly films with companions. At least one member of W.C. Fields, the Marx Brothers, the Three Stooges, and Laurel and Hardy wore a top hat during their insane exploits. You will be astonished at how well these early films have withstood the test of time.

Don a ridiculous headwear

Wear a wacky headwear and act a fool. It can be a Cat in the headgear-style headgear, an oversized wooden cap similar to Rerun’s, or a traditional top hat. When people question your actions, invite them to your tea party and tell them the tale of the Mad Hatter. Everyone needs some silliness right now.

5 REASONS WHY THE MAD HATTER IS KING

Lewis Carroll may have based the Mad Hatter on Theophilus Carter, the inventor of the Alarm Clock Bed, which roused sleepers by plunging them into a basin of ice water.

The Mad Hatter’s Shop at Disneyland features a wall mirror in which an unsettling, smiling Cheshire Cat appears after prolonged observation.

In the DC comic “Batman Number 49,” the Mad Hatter is portrayed as a supervillain/mad scientist who manipulates the minds of his victims using various devices concealed within his hat.

When published in 1865, the book by Lewis Carroll received negative reviews, with one critic describing it as “too extravagantly absurd to produce more amusement than disappointment and irritation.”

Due to his upbringing in Manchester, England, where hat-making is the predominant occupation, Lewis Carroll understood hatters, both sane and insane.
