Reheating leftovers is less stressful thanks to microwave ovens. With just a button press, you can reheat your food; if it were any simpler, it definitely wouldn't be allowed.

National Microwave Oven Day 2023:  Every year on December 6, National Microwave Oven Day is observed to honor one of the most significant household appliances. Microwave ovens can be used for melting chocolate and butter, heating leftovers, boiling water, and even cooking popcorn.

You can even make cake or fudge in the microwave these days! Additionally, microwave ovens consume up to 80% less energy than traditional ovens. Without a question, microwave ovens improve our quality of life. It follows that the fact that we have a day set aside to honor the utility of the microwave is not surprising.

The National Microwave Day History

American self-taught engineer Percy Spencer created a safe method for microwave food preparation. When he was operating active radar in 1945, he noticed that a candy bar in his pocket was melting. Spencer chose to make popcorn in the microwave as a result of his realization. Then he tried to fry an egg. The egg test blew up in his coworker’s face and performed significantly worse than the popcorn test! We now know that eggs can be cooked or even poached in microwave ovens.

Spencer, a Raytheon employee, conducted a number of safe microwave cooking experiments. He found that he could focus the magnetron’s energy and trap it inside a metal cage. He also observed that meals cooked up quickly within the box.

On October 8, 1945, Raytheon filed a patent application for a microwave oven. In 1947, Raytheon unveiled the Radarange microwave, a $5,000 device that was about six feet tall. Raytheon outsourced its patents to Tappan in 1955, and Tappan launched a $1,295 microwave that was still unsuitable for residential use.

In 1965, Raytheon acquired Amana, and in 1967, it introduced a countertop microwave that cost $495. Soon after, Litton created a microwave oven that resembles modern models, which further boosted the popularity of household microwaves. By 1975, there were one million microwaves in use in the United States, up from about 40,000 in 1971.

Despite having a bad reputation due to a few early models that leaked, their popularity increased. Throughout the 1980s, microwaveable meal recipes and consumer goods like cupcake kits were widely available, although most of these products were of low quality. Still, by 1986 about 25% of American homes had a microwave; by 1997, that number had reached 90%.
