The United States and Canada celebrate National Night Out Day on the first Tuesday of August; this year, that date is August 1. Citizens, organisations, and the Metropolitan Police Department work together to strengthen the bond between neighbourhoods and communities. They view this as an excellent method to bring people together for a good cause.
In 1970, Matt Peskin established National Night Out Day. Peskin volunteered regularly for the Lower Merion Community Watch programme, which collaborated with the Lower Merion Police Department in the western Philadelphia suburbs. Peskin frequently patrolled local areas and shortly introduced a newsletter about community achievements and volunteerism. This is when he realised that it was extremely difficult to locate new content for the newsletter. He reached out to the surrounding communities for assistance and observed that they all had local neighbourhood watch groups but no means to connect with or identify other groups. The concept of neighbourhood monitors originated in the United States in the late 1960s. As criminal activity increased during this time period, there was a general consensus that the United States required neighbourhood watch groups. Local groups have contributed to safety and security since the National Neighbourhood Watch program’s inception in the 1970s, which was partially financed by the National Sheriffs’ Association.
Nearly a decade later, Peskin founded his own organisation, the National Association of Town Watch. This organisation linked all neighbourhood town watches, supplied them with resources, and provided them with assets to help them remain operational. Three years later, we received our vacation. Peskin and the National Association of Town Watch had created a vast network of law enforcement agencies, neighbourhood watch groups, civic organisations, state and regional crime prevention associations, and even volunteers across the United States by the time this event occurred. 2.5 million neighbours from 400 communities in 23 states participated in the first celebration. Recently, the Dog Walker Watch has joined this programme, and now our canine neighbours patrol and maintain the safety of our communities alongside humans.

Texas observes this day on the first Tuesday of October, while the rest of the nation observes it on the first Tuesday of August.
As part of the initial celebrations, neighbours sat in front of their residences with their porch lights on.
By 2016, 35 million U.S. citizens had participated in these celebrations, compared to 2.5 million during the inaugural event.
The festivities can range from backyard cookouts to exhibits, amusement attractions, sports tournaments, and even floats.
According to multiple websites, the South Central Hilltop Block Watch in Columbus hosts the largest celebration, complete with live music, delicious cuisine, and incredible entertainment.
