National Pet Rock Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Pet Rocks

Gary Dahl, an advertising executive, invented the pet pebble in April 1975. Each boulder is a smooth stone collected from the Rosarito beach in Mexico.

National Pet Rock Day is observed annually on the first Sunday of September; this year, it falls on September 3. What rock have you been concealing under, for those who don’t know what you are? Clearly, this is not a companion rock. Pet pebbles are extraordinary animals adopted by tens of thousands of Americans. You may be perplexed as to why someone would maintain a rock as a pet. Well, consider it. Rocks require no grooming, no veterinary care, no food, never become ill, and best of all, they never perish! Amazing, yes? Continue reading to find out what else makes these creatures so unique.

The background of National Pet Rock Day

Gary Dahl, an advertising executive, invented the pet pebble in April 1975. Each boulder is a smooth stone collected from the Rosarito beach in Mexico. It was packaged in a customised cardboard box with ventilation openings and a straw. Die-cutting and fabricating cardboard packaging constituted Dahl’s greatest production expense. The stones were marketed as if they were living animals.

This peculiar invention was inspired by Dahl’s friends’ complaints about the difficulty of caring for their pets. During a conversation in a pub, Dahl joked about having a pet rock. He emphasised that rocks do not require walking, feeding, medical care, or any other requirements a living creature requires.
Dahl, however, did not stop at mere witticisms; he outdid them.

He then penned a pet rock instruction manual that included quips and puns about “care” for the rock. The instruction manual was a popular addition to the pet rock, exhibiting Dahl’s incredible wit. After a brief sales increase during the 1975 holiday season, the pet rock craze came to an end.

Prior to the product’s discontinuation in February 1976, Gary Dahl made a tidy profit by selling over a million pet pebbles. At the time, each rock was sold for $4, making this one of the most intriguing marketing strategies in history. Taking the $4 into account in the context of current prices, each person would have to pay $18 for a companion rock!
