Throughout the 20th century, masculine pin-ups were less prevalent than female pin-ups and were referred to as “beefcake.” During this time, images of masculine celebrities were marketed to women and girls.

Pin-up modelling originated with burlesque performers in the theatre. American burlesque is a form of variety performance that incorporates elements of Victorian burlesque, music hall, and minstrel shows. It gained popularity in the late 1860s and gradually incorporated female nudity and black comedy. In the late 1920s, the burlesque striptease element overshadowed the comedy and was subject to extensive local legislation. In the 1940s, as legislatures cracked down on them, they progressively lost favour.
