National Presidential Joke Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

This day is based on a remark made by former President Ronald Reagan. Reagan stated during a soundcheck for his regular Saturday evening radio broadcast on NPR, "My fellow Americans, I am delighted to inform you today that I have signed legislation that will permanently outlaw Russia.

We enjoy a good joke, and the fact that a U.S. president has told it makes it even hilarious; therefore, National Presidential Joke Day on August 11 is one of our favourite holidays to observe. This day is intended to highlight the humour emanating from our nation’s highest office. We commemorate a holiday that recognises the fact that presidents also have a sense of humour by examining the quips — both intentional and unintentional — made by current and former presidents.

The background of National Presidential Joke Day

This day is based on a remark made by former President Ronald Reagan. Reagan stated during a soundcheck for his regular Saturday evening radio broadcast on NPR, “My fellow Americans, I am delighted to inform you today that I have signed legislation that will permanently outlaw Russia. The bombing will commence in five minutes.” Unknown to him was the fact that the feed was live.

Since 1982, networks have kept remarks made during soundchecks private; however, this particular feed was leaked to the general public. The joke appeared on the front page of “The London Standard,” and was subsequently broadcast on CBS’s Monday evening newscast. His supporters adored it, while his detractors disapproved. Neither did Soviet Russia. Upon hearing the broadcast, they reportedly placed their military on high alert, and when it became obvious that this was not a threat, they referred to it as a “monstrous” statement. The United States decided to commemorate Reagan’s joke by instituting National Presidential Joke Day because it was so well received. However, Reagan is not the only president with a sense of humour.

George Washington was a powerful political leader, but his humour shone through in numerous instances. Consider the names of his canines as an example. Tipsy, Mopsey, Ragman, Truelove, and Vulcan are their names. Even during the worst days of the Revolutionary War, his letters are filled with humorous asides and gags.

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was another prominent leader with a sense of humour. This aspect of his character was so well-known that his adversaries wrote a song titled “Hey! Uncle Abe, Are You Still Joking?’

Former President Barack Obama was renowned for never passing up an opportunity to crack a joke, even at formal occasions such as the annual White House Correspondents Dinner. He claimed he reserved his worst jokes for the Presidential Turkey Ceremony, delivering a “cornucopia of dad jokes about turkeys.”
