National Respect Day encourages us to be more respectful to everyone and to assist others in doing the same on September 18 each year. This year, our celebration coincides with National Cheeseburger Day, World Bamboo Day, and even International Red Panda Day.

The background of National Respect Day

The dictionary defines’respect’ as a sensation of admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or accomplishments. We were undoubtedly taught respect from a young age. We were instructed to respect our parents, elders, teachers, school regulations, traffic rules, country, etc. As adults, we have come to understand the significance of this respect, and we may even instruct those who lack such emotions for others. Self-respect is another form of respect that we have progressively learned about. We study it, cultivate it, and struggle to maintain it in the face of difficulty.

Respect and self-respect are so appealing to ancient and contemporary philosophers, especially moral and political philosophers, because of their importance. Respect and self-respect have been mentioned in discussions pertaining to justice and equality, cultural diversity and tolerance, punishment, and political violence. The theory of respect is also at the centre of numerous ethical debates, with some holding that it is the essence of morality and others using it as the basis for other moral philosophies.

This emphasis is largely attributable to the German philosopher Immanuel Kant, the first Western philosopher to place reverence for individuals at the centre of moral theory. He insisted that individuals are ends in and of themselves, possessing absolute dignity that must always be respected. This is now a central tenet of contemporary humanism and political liberalism. Even today, the majority of contemporary discussions about respect reference, rely on, or contest Kant’s theories.
