National Seat Check Saturday 2023: Date, History, Facts about Safety of Child Passenger

National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program was created by the National Safety Council of the United States. This is an essential training program for the certification of child passenger safety technicians and instructors who assist parents in transporting children safely.

National Seat Check Saturday is celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday of September, which this year falls on September 23. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States created this day to promote child safety and raise awareness about seat check procedures for child safety seats when traveling. Rising numbers of car accidents in the United States have resulted in countless injuries and deaths of children, which could have been avoided if they had adhered to appropriate safety protocols. It is essential to provide a juvenile passenger with the most fundamental form of safety restraint while traveling.

The background of National Seat Check Saturday

National Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program was created by the National Safety Council of the United States. This is an essential training program for the certification of child passenger safety technicians and instructors who assist parents in transporting children safely. The program seeks to address three of the most prevalent dangers to child passengers: improperly used or installed safety seats, overheated vehicles, and teenage drivers.

Child passenger safety initiative dates back to the mid-1990s, when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) assembled a small team of child passenger safety professionals known as the Patterns for Life Team to investigate the protocols and status of child passenger safety in the United States. The Patterns for Life Team developed a nationwide standardized curriculum and a national certification procedure for technicians and instructors based on their research.

A standardized curriculum alone could not achieve little. They still required the input of practitioners in the discipline. Representatives from car seat manufacturers, injury prevention officers, and national and local organizations formed a second group. The National Child Passenger Safety Board was established in 1993 after this group was established.
In 1998, the first standardized curriculum for safety certification was published. The National Child Passenger Safety Board is currently responsible for curriculum oversight and makes relevant recommendations.

There have been additional initiatives to improve infant safety protocols. Safe Ride News is a publishing company in the United States that concentrates on educational materials for child passenger safety. In 2008, they also published a 44-year timeline of child passenger safety developments, ranging from a 1965 protest by clinicians demanding automotive safety to changes in school bus seating requirements.

According to the United States Department of Transportation, two minors under the age of 13 were killed and approximately 374 were injured daily in road accidents in 2019.

Correctly installed car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers in the event of a car accident.

After being adopted by every state, child safety seat laws have contributed to a 35% reduction in child fatalities.

More than fifty percent of car seats are still improperly used or installed, increasing the risk of injury to minor passengers.
