National Sleepy Head Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

This day's origin dates back to 250 A.D., when it was first mentioned in folklore. In order to avoid imminent persecution, seven individuals fled to the fringes of Ephesus during the reign of King Decius.

National Sleepy Head Day is observed every year on July 27. This peculiar Finnish custom originated in the Middle Ages as a cleansing ritual against laziness.

On this day, it is best to leave your bed as soon as possible and absolutely before 7 a.m. If you are the last person to wake up today, your friends or family may douse you with a pail of water or throw you into a lake, pool, or ocean.

If you have an understanding group, ask them to toss you into a tub filled with essential oils and bubbles; you will end up smelling pleasant and your skin will benefit (just saying!).

The background of National Sleepy Head Day

This day’s origin dates back to 250 A.D., when it was first mentioned in folklore. In order to avoid imminent persecution, seven individuals fled to the fringes of Ephesus during the reign of King Decius. They hid in a cage there. Upon discovering this, King Decius ordered the entrance to the cave to be sealed. In this cage, seven males fell asleep. After 200 years, the cave was opened to find seven males still sleeping inside. This myth is known as the ‘Seven Sleepers of Ephesus.’

It is believed that a person who rests in on this day will have a less-than-productive year. In the past, the person who awoke last was considered the laziest member of the household. They were frequently awakened by water gushing.

National Sleepy Head Day is commemorated with an informal celebration. Finland’s Naantali commemorates the occasion by throwing a celebrity off the docks. The identity of the selected sleeper is concealed until the final instant. Additionally, a sleeper must have contributed to the prosperity of the city in order to receive the impact.

Numerous actors, writers, politicians, and artists have made the plunge. At least once, every mayor of the city has visited the piers. From a political standpoint, it is intended to symbolise the removal of corruption and inactivity. People of all ages engage in traditional Finnish activities until dusk.

NATIONAL SLEEPY HEAD DAY ACTIVITIES

Get to bed early

Try not to be the last person in bed today, unless you want an unforeseen shower. Come on, now! Rise and shine!

Be effective

Coffee down and get to work. The purpose of this day is to eliminate sloth. Therefore, be as active as feasible today (or perhaps every day).

Go Analogue

The older generation frequently labels Millennials and Gen Z as slothful. This is predominantly due to the restriction of our daily movement to our fingertips. Going analogue can be a useful practise for modern society. Walk to the grocery store instead of ordering it online, meet a friend in person instead of video chatting, or take the stairs instead of the lift.

5 FACTS ABOUT LAZINESS

According to a survey, 90% of people click “Agree” without perusing legal clauses.

As people become increasingly dependent on technology, they prefer to use their fingertips over their brains.

With the internet offering short content that can be read in less than five seconds, who has the patience to read 300 pages? Therefore, to appear more intelligent, many people fib about reading a book.

Bill Gates once remarked, “Choose a lazy person for a difficult task, because that person will find an easy way to complete it.”

Laziness can be caused by a lack of vitality, so it is essential to get sufficient rest in order to feel refreshed and ready to work.
