National Socks Day 2023: National Sock Day is December 4. It’s a time to honor the socks that have managed to stay together and maybe to mourn the socks that have lost their partners in the wash over the years. National Sock Day is on November 16. If you like knee-high, crew, ankle, or low-cut socks, or even socks with tiny holes, this holiday will make you love them even more.

National Socks Day: History

That’s right, everyone needs socks, whether they know it or not. Everybody wears socks every day, from babies to grandpas. People didn’t wear shoes before the 2nd century A.D.; instead, they wrapped their feet in cloth or dried animal skins to keep them warm or cool. Socks are now made from silk, cotton, wool, and polyester, among other materials, and come in many colors and styles. Socks have become a form of art and fashion because there are so many names to choose from.

National Sock Day was made by a clothes company called Pair of Thieves on December 4. The business website says that they began today “to warm our toes with the commemoration of two toe-tapping historical events that happened on this day.” It was officially decided in 2016 that December 4 would be National Sock Day every year.

The first historical event they talk about is December 4, 1954, when the first revival of the Broadway show “On Your Toes” closed. This show was unique because it had ballet in it. For the second “toe-tapping” event that the holiday honors, the last show by the country music mother-daughter duo The Judds in 1991.

The company goes above and beyond for National Sock Day by giving away a pair of socks for every #nationalsockday post on the day. As part of their give-back program, they give away socks all year long. For every pair of socks bought, they give three pairs to people in need.
