National Spirit of ’45 Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Greatest Generation

The invasion of Poland by Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany in 1939 is widely regarded as the beginning of World War II. In September, both the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany.

The 14th of August is observed annually as National Spirit of ’45 Day. The purpose of this day is to increase public awareness and participation in honouring America’s “Greatest Generation,” as designated by the U.S. Congress in 2010. Its commemoration coincides with the anniversary of August 14, 1945, when the news that “the most destructive war in human history” had ended sparked worldwide celebrations and the United States immediately began laying the groundwork for a better future for its children, their children’s children, as well as its former enemies and allies.

The background of National Spirit of ’45 Day

The invasion of Poland by Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Germany in 1939 is widely regarded as the beginning of World War II. In September, both the United Kingdom and France declared war on Germany. In a series of conflicts and treaties from late 1939 to early 1941, Germany captured or controlled the majority of continental Europe and formed the Axis alliance with Italy and Japan. The world’s largest land battle began on the Eastern Front on June 22, 1941, when Germany led the European Axis nations in an invasion of the Soviet Union.

Japan declared war on the Republic of China in 1937. In December 1941, Japan attacked American and British colonies, prompting the United States to declare war on Japan. A few days later, the European Axis powers declared war on the United States in unison. The Western Allies invaded German-occupied France in 1944, while the Soviet Union recaptured lost territory and concentrated on Germany and its allies.

On May 8, 1945, the conflict in Europe ended with the liberation of German-occupied territories, the invasion of Germany by the Western Allies and the Soviet Union, and Hitler’s suicide, which led to Germany’s unconditional surrender. Japan declared its intention to capitulate on August 14, 1945, and Japanese officials signed the Instrument of capitulate on September 2, 1945, ensuring the Allies’ decisive victory in Asia.
