The Maidstone Swimming Club, founded in 1844 in Maidstone, Kent, is one of the oldest swimming organisations still in existence in Britain. In response to a spate of drownings in the region’s rivers, its establishment was motivated by a desire to teach people how to swim and, consequently, avoid drowning. Underwood Pool is the oldest documented swimming pool in the United States. It is located in Belmont, Massachusetts. After World War II, residential swimming pools became popular in the United States, and the presence of pools in the mansions of Hollywood celebrities made them an even more desirable status symbol. The United States currently has over 10.4 million residential swimming pools, but New Zealand maintains the record for the most swimming pools per capita.
