National Water Balloon Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The town of Newmarket, New Hampshire, initiated National Water Balloon Day in 2019 as a means for residents to have fun while escaping the summer heat.

National Water Balloon Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of August. This year’s holiday falls on. It celebrates the water-filled, jiggling balloons that can make a dull, hot summer day memorable and pleasurable. It is a day to immerse yourself in the wet fun and exhilarating pleasures of a splashy melee with your loved ones, occurring at the height of summer.

The background of National Water Balloon Day

The town of Newmarket, New Hampshire, initiated National Water Balloon Day in 2019 as a means for residents to have fun while escaping the summer heat. It is viewed as a healthy, family-friendly activity because it is an inclusive, energetic activity that fosters bonding and can be relished by individuals of all ages.

Water balloons, a staple of pool parties, playgrounds, and the summer, bring so much joy to those who engage with them. There is a certain thrill and enthusiasm associated with tossing a jiggly ball of water and watching it explode in a shower of moisture and rubber flakes. Throwing balloons back and forth excites many individuals in a manner that cannot be matched by any other activity.

Since its introduction in 1950, the water balloon has kept much of its original form and function. In the past, British inventor Edgar Ellington was searching for a solution to treat trench foot by filling a latex stocking with water. Upon noticing that it was leaking, he hurled the water-filled orb against a table and watched as it exploded. Ellington was inspired to market his accidental invention as a children’s toy, which remains the case to this day.
However, since its invention, there have been numerous innovations, including the invention of new varieties and the development of more efficient methods and devices for filling it. Additionally, water balloon battles help participants develop skills such as strategic thinking, collaboration, and leadership. However, the water balloon’s primary purpose is the same as it was decades ago: to bring simple, wet enjoyment to everyone.
Remember to maintain a towel on hand!

Activities associated with National Water Balloon Day

Host your own celebration!

Gather your family and friends for a soiree and let loose! Be sure to have enough balloons for everyone to hurl, and always play with caution. There may be a water balloon battle, but nobody should be injured while having joy.

Select a game to enjoy.

There are a number of well-known games that can be played with water balloons if you are unsure of how to play. One of them is a hot-potato-style musical chairs game called “water balloon kryptonite” in which you must avoid being the last person holding the balloon (unless you want to get wet).

Add some merriment to a gathering

If an acquaintance or relative is hosting a party for their children, it is not inappropriate to offer water balloons if they deem it appropriate. When given the go-ahead, bring as many water balloons as possible to the party to make it more enjoyable for the children, and enjoy the sound of their merriment echoing through the chaos.

5 Interesting Facts Concerning Balloons

Historically, the first balloons were manufactured from the bladders and intestines of animals.

Latex balloons are capable of flying more than three miles above the earth.

When balloons burst, they generate minor sonic booms.
Due to the fact that the sound of a burst party balloon travels quicker than the speed of sound, it is extremely loud.

Due to the properties of helium, helium balloons last between eight and twelve hours in a cold environment, but they shrink in colder temperatures.

Phileas Fogg never used a hot air balloon during his journey around the globe in “Around the World in Eighty Days” by Jules Verne.
