National Women’s Fly Fishing Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

It is believed that fly fishing began in the second century in modern-day Rome. It became commonplace to imitate a fly drifting on the water's surface.

National Women’s Fly Fishing Day is observed on June 27 each year. The day is dedicated to recognising and promoting female fly fishing enthusiasts worldwide! The woman responsible for the establishment of this holiday observance in 2020 is Emerald Water Anglers. Women are encouraged to establish friendships with other female anglers in their communities and fly fish, learn from one another, uplift and support one another. By publishing images, we can increase our visibility.

The background of National Women’s Fly Fishing Day

It is believed that fly fishing began in the second century in modern-day Rome. It became commonplace to imitate a fly drifting on the water’s surface.

England produced lengthier, more robust rods with hand-crafted lines around the 16th century. When Europeans arrived in the Americas, fly fishing flourished, drastically altering the fishing industry.

In the nineteenth century, technology began to acquire traction and evolved into the methods we use today. It is believed that the first brass free-spooling fly reel, which was later adopted by American anglers, was invented in England. Midway through the nineteenth century, fly reels and fishing rods were common among mountain males.

At first glance, fly fishing appears to be a predominantly masculine activity. However, if you delve a little deeper, you will find the enduring legacy that female fishermen have left behind. Joan Wulff was the one who revolutionised the sport for all time. In 1943, at the age of 16, she achieved first place in the National Dry Fly Accuracy competition. Before winning the National Fisherman’s Distance Fly Championship with a 136-foot cast against an all-male field, she won 21 additional casting titles. In the early 1950s, when women’s rights were severely restricted, Joan Wulff became known as the “World’s Best Fly Caster.”
