The purpose of National Workaholics Day on July 5 is to remind us to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Workaholics tend to prioritise work over nearly everything else. This includes their family, colleagues, and even their own health for the sake of their work performance and pursuit of perfection. Consequently, numerous aspects of their lives are negatively impacted. If they do not take appropriate care of themselves, their romantic relationships may suffer, and they may become lethargic. National Workaholics Day reminds us to take care of ourselves outside of work, as well!

The background of National Workaholics Day

There have been numerous shifts in work ethic over the centuries. In the sixteenth century, Puritans redefined work as an obligation that benefited all of society, and the concept of “good works” was developed. Catholics regarded labour as a requirement and a manifestation of the faith they had received. As the world evolved, this connection between faith and labour would endure for centuries.

When Puritans immigrated to the New World, they carried with them a strong work ethic. They fled religious persecution and created the Colonial American Dream, which was based on the belief that virtuous deeds brought prosperity. They established a society in New England based on the principles of ambition, tenacity, and the relentless pursuit of success, believing that their efforts on Earth would be rewarded in paradise.

In his 1905 book, “The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism,” the German sociologist Max Weber defined this concept. As a result of the Industrial Revolution’s mechanisation of labour, there was a radical transition in labour ideology at this time. As the manufacturing process became more industrialised, mass consumption increased, and the local workshops disappeared. This was less predicated on faith because the individual craftsmanship of the person was replaced by the machine.

In the 1950s, there was another shift in labour dynamics. Young employees were eager to climb the corporate ladder, obey the rules, and please their superiors. Fortune magazine referred to this risk-averse approach as “grey flannel mentality” In 1968, comedian Rodney Dangerfield coined the term “workaholics” to characterise his father’s reliance on alcohol to deal with the pressures of work. National Workaholics Day aims to rectify the fact that many people still have problematic work-life balances.
