In addition to its development in ancient India, there is no consensus on the origins or chronology of yoga. In the early Upanishads of the first half of the first millennium B.C., yoga speculations emerged, and between 500 and 200 B.C., Jain and Buddhist texts also included yoga explanations.
The 25th of September is National YogaFit Day, a celebration of physical and mental fitness through yoga. Yoga is an ancient mental, physical, and spiritual practice that originated in India. The word ‘yoga’ is derived from Sanskrit and it literally translates to joining or uniting, which symbolizes the union of body and consciousness. Two general hypotheses exist regarding the origins of yoga. According to the linear paradigm, yoga has Vedic roots, which are reflected in Vedic literature. This theory also asserts that Buddhism was influenced by it. According to author Edward Fitzpatrick Crangle, Hindu scholars primarily endorse this model. However, according to the synthesis paradigm, yoga is a synthesis of indigenous, non-Vedic, and Vedic elements. In Western scholarship, the synthesis paradigm is favored.
In addition to its development in ancient India, there is no consensus on the origins or chronology of yoga. In the early Upanishads of the first half of the first millennium B.C., yoga speculations emerged, and between 500 and 200 B.C., Jain and Buddhist texts also included yoga explanations. During this period, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism took shape; teachings were received as sutras, and “Patanjali Yogashastra” began to emerge as a philosophical system.
Yoga satellite traditions emerged among the educated public elites of the Western world around the middle of the 19th century. The Vedas, which are the only surviving texts from the early Vedic period and were codified between 1200 B.C. and 900 B.C., contain references to yogic and other practices associated primarily with ascetics and the periphery of Brahmanism. According to the Nasadiya Sukta of the Rig Veda, yoga was an ancient Brahmanic contemplative tradition. Breath control techniques and vital energies are mentioned in the “Atharvaveda” and the “Brahmanas,” the second stratum of the Vedas composed between 1000 B.C. and 800 B.C.
Yoga and other aspects of Indian philosophy were brought to the attention of the educated Western public in the middle of the 19th century, and N. C. Paul published his “Treatise on Yoga Philosophy” in 1851. In the 1890s, Swami Vivekananda traversed Europe and the United States as the first Hindu teacher to promote and spread yoga concepts to a Western audience.
