Nature has been a cause for celebration since the dawn of time! Before the invention of the camera, nature enthusiasts had to record their observations in a very distinct manner.
Pliny the Younger’s account of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., which consumed the Ancient Roman city of Pompeii, is one of the earliest and most significant natural history accounts. Pliny’s two letters are the only surviving eyewitness accounts of that day’s events, and they constitute crucial evidence for the study of natural history and ancient civilizations.
Early naturalists recorded nature primarily for medicinal purposes, with differing degrees of precision! Some of the healing properties of flora and natural remedies were believed to be real, while others were merely superstitions. Nonetheless, throughout the Middle Ages, naturalists chronicled their recipes and documented the properties of plants. And during the Renaissance, their comprehension of nature began to progressively improve.
In the 19th century, naturalist and scientist Charles Darwin published “On the Origin of Species,” in which he detailed his theories of evolution and the evidence he had gathered to support them. It was a controversial work because it contradicted the creation narrative in the Bible and because the author argued that man descended from apes, which made many people uncomfortable. During the same period, scientists were developing the camera, which Darwin utilised in his research.
Darwin’s work was the foundation of natural history and the beginning of significant leaps in our understanding of nature. Nature Photography Day was established in 2006 by the North American Nature Photography Association to encourage people to learn about and appreciate nature photography.
