After World War II, crop failures in the Midwest led to the emergence of puppy mills. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) actively promoted puppy mills as profitable and risk-free businesses, which may be hard to believe today.
Every year on 21 July, No Pet Store Puppies Day is observed to promote public awareness of puppy mills and their ties to pet stores that sell puppies, kittens and rabbits. The holiday also encourages individuals to adopt their best companion from a local shelter or rescue organisation, or to conduct research and locate a reputable breeder.
We are reminding dog owners that pet stores are not the best location to purchase a new puppy. We believe that the hazards of the puppy mill industry are now widely known. It is prudent to educate or remind those who are unfamiliar with the pet store industry.
After World War II, crop failures in the Midwest led to the emergence of puppy mills. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) actively promoted puppy mills as profitable and risk-free businesses, which may be hard to believe today. The government encouraged farmers to place dogs in poultry coops and rabbit hutches before selling puppies to pet stores.
There are between 2,000 and 3,000 federally registered commercial breeding facilities in the United States, approximately 1,045 of which are located in Missouri (645), Iowa (237), and Kansas (178). USDA estimates that there are approximately 10,000 puppy mills. Due to their smaller size, however, the majority of these breeders are not adequately regulated or required to be licenced. Because the U.S. Department of Agriculture does not track these breeders, it is virtually impossible to determine the number of puppy mills in the United States.
In addition, it is difficult to determine how many canines reside in puppy mills because some breeders are not permitted to keep accurate records, and if the breeder is illegal, they will purposely not keep records. According to the Humane Society of the United States (H.S.U.S. ), each year approximately 1,075,896 puppies are born in U.S.D.A.-licensed facilities, and 176,088 dogs are retained for breeding. Additionally, the H.S.U.S. estimates that 2.15 million puppies are sold annually. Unfortunately, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has no authority over the internet, where many of these animals are sold.
The thought that hundreds of thousands of dogs spend their entire lives in small, filthy, overcrowded cages without even the most basic veterinary treatment is heartbreaking.

Ensure that you are not supporting a puppy mill by conducting research prior to making a purchase and by meeting the parent canines in their home environment. Adopt your next closest friend from a local shelter or rescue organisation.
Inform individuals as to how and why certain creatures in pet stores are not receiving proper care. Engage your relatives in the cause.
Many canines can now find permanent homes through social media. Utilise your online social media presence to raise awareness about animals that are less adoptable.
According to the evidence, puppy mills can be found anywhere, and there are an estimated 10,000 puppy mills in the United States.
The sole purpose of puppy mills is to produce puppies as cheaply as feasible.
While the legality of puppy mills varies by jurisdiction, sixteen states currently have no restrictions in place.
In spite of the fact that restrictions on commercial mills may be lenient in some areas, some operations adhere to all applicable regulations.
These dogs exist solely for breeding, giving birth, and nursing their young for the first few weeks of their lifetimes.
