Save Your Photos Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Captivating Photographic

In the 1830s, the term photography was first used. It derives from the Greek terms 'photos' meaning 'light' and 'graphein' meaning 'to draw' and was allegedly coined by the British scientist Sir John Herschel.

Save Your Photos Day is observed annually on the last Saturday of September, which this year falls on September 30. This was an initiative by the Save Your Photos Alliance, conceptualized by The Association of Personal Photo Organizers. Very frequently, we neglect to preserve the photos themselves, despite the fact that they aid us in preserving and recalling cherished memories. Photos can at any time become misplaced, deleted, or damaged. They do not last eternally if they are neglected. Save Your Photos Day attempts to remind us how important it is to preserve our photographs, as they are all that remains as time passes.

The background of Save Your Photos Day

In the 1830s, the term photography was first used. It derives from the Greek terms ‘photos’ meaning ‘light’ and ‘graphein’ meaning ‘to draw’ and was allegedly coined by the British scientist Sir John Herschel.

Before the invention of the digital camera, photographs were created by manipulating light and focusing it on specific objects that needed to be captured.
Joseph Nicéphore Niépce discovered heliography in 1816, making it the first type of photography. It involved placing bitumen-coated plates inside an older prototype of the camera known as a Camera Obscura. The plates were then exposed to sunlight for an extended period of time, causing the exposed areas to become brittle. The remaining portions of the plate were washed clean. Thus, the first impressions were produced using sunlight.

The daguerreotype was an additional form of photography that was invented in 1837. It was named for Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre eries. It used copper plates and produced no negatives. The plate was exposed to an image and sunlight for some time, and then mercury vapors were used to solidify it. After this, the plate would be washed with saline, resulting in an inverted photograph. The daguerreotype was the first form of photography to gain popularity in the United States.

Later on, additional varieties of photography, including Calotype, Cyanotype, and Ambrotype, were discovered. Kodak introduced Kodachrome color film in 1935. This involved a number of processes, each of which utilized distinct dye colors, such as cyan, magenta, and yellow. During this time period, Kodak was responsible for numerous significant innovations in the field of photography. Steve Sasson, a former Kodak employee, was responsible for the invention of the first digital camera in 1975.
