Stonewall Riots Anniversary 2023: Date, History, Facts about Same-Sex Marriage

During the 1960s, the attitude towards homosexual and lesbian people was somewhat disdainful, and these communities were frequently subjected to police brutality.

The Stonewall Riots Anniversary is observed annually on June 28. Today, we are participating in the celebration to promote the significance of sexual freedom of choice. Sexuality is influenced by biology, psychology, lifestyle choices, and other factors. The Stonewall Riots Anniversary commemorates the beginning of the Stonewall Riots on June 28, 1969. When police brutality began to affect the lives of the homosexual and lesbian community, they fought back. As a consequence, a series of demonstrations and riots shaped the modern LGBT rights movements.

The background of Stonewall Riots Anniversary

During the 1960s, the attitude towards homosexual and lesbian people was somewhat disdainful, and these communities were frequently subjected to police brutality. Typically, bars do not encourage the gay and lesbian community. Typically, the mafia and other organised criminal organisations ran the establishments where they were welcomed. Moreover, police searches on these bars were common. The crime family Genovese owned the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street. It was a location rumoured to peddle drugs and engage in other illegal activities. It was also the only location where homosexuals could dance openly.

On June 28, 1969, two undercover police officers entered the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village to collect visual evidence, while the Public Morals unit awaited their signal outside. As soon as the officers, Detective Charles Smythe, and Deputy Inspector Seymour Pine arrived, the unfolding of events began. The brutality of the police actions prompted violent responses from inn patrons and bystanders. The entire occurrence sparked the protests and unrest that launched the LGBT movement.
