Teddy Bear Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Teddy Bear

Teddy bears were developed as a tribute to President Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt went bear trapping near Onward, Mississippi, on November 14, 1902. Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino had invited him.

The ninth of September is Teddy Bear Day, a day set aside for everyone to bring out their teddy bears to thank them for their companionship, the beautiful times we’ve shared with them, and all the nights they’ve comforted us. The teddy bear is one of the most popular children’s toys, and it also holds a special place in the affections of many adults. Teddy Bear Day is a celebration honouring this endearing stuffed animal. It enables individuals to bring Teddy out of hiding and make them the centre of attention.

The background of Teddy Bear Day

Teddy bears were developed as a tribute to President Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt went bear trapping near Onward, Mississippi, on November 14, 1902. Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino had invited him. Unlike other members of the hunting party, Roosevelt had not managed to shot a single bear.

Roosevelt’s assistants captured and tied a black bear to a willow tree, led by Holt Collier, a former Confederate cavalryman born into slavery. They contacted Roosevelt and requested that he film it. Roosevelt refused to fire the bear because he believed it to be extremely unsporting. The news quickly spread across the nation via newspaper articles. The accounts described the president’s refusal to kill a bear. It wasn’t just any president, either; it was Theodore Roosevelt, the large game hunter.

Clifford Berryman, a political cartoonist, saw the report and decided to humorously parody the president’s refusal to kill the bear. On November 16, 1902, Berryman’s caricature appeared in the “Washington Post.” Morris Michtom, the owner of a candy store in Brooklyn, saw the caricature and had an idea. Michtom decided to create a plush bear for the president who refused to fire a bear, as he and his wife Rose also manufactured stuffed animals. He christened it “Teddy’s Bear.”

Michtom mass manufactured the toy bears after obtaining Roosevelt’s permission to use his name, which was so successful that he shortly created the Ideal Toy Company. Within a few years, the demand for teddy bears grew so quickly that he founded a company to manufacture them.

Around the same time, the German company Steiff began manufacturing movable-jointed teddy bears. Each year, millions of teddy bears are marketed and given as gifts, or produced to commemorate particular events or occasions. And it appears unlikely that their appeal will be denied shortly.
