This year, we are celebrating Waqfat Arafat Day on June 28. On the ninth day of the Islamic calendar’s final month — Dhul-Hijjah — Muslims observe a religious holiday. It is also the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage and the day preceding Eid al-Adha. Waqfat Arafat Day is primarily observed on the slopes of Mount Arafat and the Arafah Plain. The Prophet Muhammad chose this location to deliver one of his final sermons. Waqfat Arafat Day dates are approximate because the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle and is based on the sighting of the moon.
Waqfat Arafat’s history is intertwined with that of Islam itself. On Mount Arafat, the prophet Muhammad delivered his last sermons. This is one of the most significant Islamic holidays. The history of Islam begins with Muhammad’s birth. Before his time, the entire Middle East adhered to ancient polytheistic and Semitic religions.
When Muhammad received his first revelation atop Mount Hira, the world underwent a radical transformation. From there, he received the message of Allah from Gabriel. On this day, he began to receive revelations, which continued for the following 22 years. The Islamic calendar begins with Muhammad’s migration, or ‘hijra.’ The term “Hijra” denotes the migration from Mecca to Medina. In 629 A.D., after a series of conflicts in the subsequent years, he made his first pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims quickly outnumbered other authorities during this time period. In 630 A.D., the Quraysh, the group of clans that controlled Mecca, recognised the Muslims’ increasing power. They gave the Muslims control of Mecca.
Two years after the conquest of Mecca, Muhammad performed the Hajj for the first and last time. During this pilgrimage, Muhammad visited Mount Arafat and delivered one of his final sermons. Today is a day of great forgiveness. The day is spent in prayer and fasting.
