Working Parents Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Working Parents

Working Parents Day is an annual event held every year on September 16. Working parents must juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously. Holding down a full-time job, caring for their children’s comprehensive requirements, performing daily household duties, and most importantly, caring for themselves. It is only reasonable that they receive the recognition they deserve.

The background of Working Parents Day

The creators of Working Parents Day remain unclear, however, it is a much-needed holiday to appreciate the efforts of people who manage multiple responsibilities. According to the United States Bureau of Labour Statistics, approximately 61% of families with children have both parents working outside the home.

From the 1700s to the 1900s, traditional gender roles for non-white immigrants were disregarded because both men and women were required to work to survive. Later, immigrants of Chinese descent witnessed both parents operating launderettes. Later, as mothers took on more domestic responsibilities, the situation changed. In the 1950s and 1960s, television depicted a stereotypical culture in which males worked to earn money and support their families while women stayed at home as housewives and child caretakers. This resulted in the deeply ingrained belief that men and women were required to adhere to these gender roles and that any deviation would result in negative criticism from society.

It is a welcome development that there are significantly more mothers in the workforce now than in the past. Parents have recognised the significance of defying stereotypes and doing what works best for them. Even more frequently, parents discover flexible work hours that allow at least one parent to stay at home with the child. Working parents plan every aspect of their daily lives to ensure that everyone’s needs are met as effectively as feasible. Working parents are unsung champions who deserve more recognition than they receive. However, family meals and other minor experiences make everything worthwhile.
