Thomas E. Lee, an archaeologist, discovered the Sheguiandah archaeological site in 1952. The island contains many artifacts dating back 30,000 years.

Father Joseph Poncet, a French Jesuit, is believed to have been the first European to settle on the island, according to the records. The Jesuits referred to the island as “Isle de Ste-Marie”. The Iroquois drove out the Anishinaabe people, who consider Manitoulin Island sacred, in 1650. After nearly a century of abandonment, the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi tribes moved onto the island.
