World Knit in Public Day is observed annually on the second Saturday of June. The purpose of the holiday is to promote knitting as a fun pastime for all ages, not just doting grandparents who want to knit a jumper for their adorable offspring. The day fosters a sense of community among knitters, who frequently celebrate by knitting in public to make their pastime more accessible to the general public. Danielle Landes founded Worldwide Knit in Public Day in 2005, and it remains the world’s largest knitting event.
Knitting is one of the earliest methods of clothing construction. Knitting dates back to at least fifth-century Egypt, according to the earliest known records. Egyptians historically knitted with cotton, not wool. During this time period, it was common for knitwear to incorporate symbols or blessings to ward off ill luck. Later, the practise spread to Europe via Mediterranean trade routes and to the Americas through colonialism.
Knitting quickly became a global phenomenon. In the 14th century, knitted weatherproof sweaters for mariners became relatively common. The advent of the Industrial Revolution ushered in the automation of duties, including knitting. Knitting machinery were utilised to knit hosiery for the upper class. Slowly, a local knitting industry emerged in Scotland and began producing hosiery for distribution throughout Europe. The first knitting loom was constructed in 1816, and Eugene Rodier established the first even woollen textile factory in 1856.
In the 20th century, knitwear had become an integral part of the contemporary fashion industry. It was featured in countless fashion collections, ranging from those by lesser-known designers to those by established luxury labels such as Chanel. Today, knitwear is an integral element of year-round fashion. Warm sweaters, caps, mufflers, mittens, and balaclavas, among other knitted items, make the colder weather more bearable during the warmer months.
