Motorcycle Safety Equipment Figures

Due to their lack of protection, motorcyclists are significantly more likely to be severely injured or killed in an accident than those riding in automobiles or trucks. Illinois is one of only three states in the United States without a mandatory helmet law; Iowa and New Hampshire are the others.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises that all motorcyclists utilize helmets as an essential piece of safety equipment. Multiple startling statistics illustrate this point:

  • Helmets likely prevented the fatalities of 1,872 motorcyclists in just one recent year.
  • If every motorcyclist had worn a helmet that year, an additional 749 lives would have been saved in motorcycle accidents.
  • According to the NHTSA, motorcycle helmets prevent only 37% of fatal head injuries. It is estimated that they are approximately 41% effective at reducing fatalities among motorcycle riders and their occupants.
  • In states like Illinois that do not have universal helmet legislation, 57 percent of motorcyclists murdered in traffic accidents in a recent year were not wearing a helmet, compared to only 8 percent in states that have implemented universal helmet regulations.
  • Sixty-nine percent of motorcyclists slain in accidents in Illinois last year were unprotected by a helmet.
