The medical examiner officially categorized Zimmer’s demise as “complications of chronic ethanol use disorder.”

According to the CDC, excessive alcohol use is the leading preventable cause of mortality in the United States, accounting for approximately 140,000 deaths annually.

At 1:13 p.m. on Monday, October 31st, officers were requested to check on Zimmer at his residence in the 2500 block of Condon Court in Mendota Heights. According to the Mendota Heights Police Department, Zimmer’s body was discovered at his residence.

The agency states that “there are no indications of foul play” and that his death did not involve any unusual circumstances. As per the medical examiner’s findings, the cause of his death was deemed “natural.”

Following the 2014 appointment of Mike Zimmer as head coach, Zimmer joined the Vikings. He held the position of linebackers coach from the 2019 season until his promotion to co-defensive coordinator in 2020.

As per police superintendent Wayne Wegener Jr., the Mendota Heights Police Department conducted a welfare check on Zimmer, a Minnesota resident.

As officers approached Zimmer’s residence, he had already succumbed to his injuries. Wegener stated at the time that the Hennepin County medical examiner would ascertain and disclose the cause of his death and that no suspicious circumstances were being investigated.

According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, one week after the discovery of Zimmer’s corpse, police submitted an affidavit for a search warrant in which they were informed of an individual who appeared to be so intoxicated that he was rendered unconscious. The publication reports that upon their arrival, they discovered Zimmer dead on a sofa.

Zimmer, according to the affidavit presented to the Dakota County District Court by the police, also suffered an ocular injury.

Zimmer “appears to have bruising or blood pooling around his eye,” as stated in police reports. The filing contains no evidence of misconduct, according to police, as reported by the Star Tribune.
