Bill Reynolds, a renowned sportswriter for the Providence Journal, passed away on Wednesday. He was 78. Reynolds’ cause of death was not revealed by the Journal, but the publication’s staff produced an obituary for him nonetheless.

They wrote, “Bill Reynolds, who spent nearly four decades writing a popular column for the Providence Journal and a dozen books, passed away on Thursday.”

According to the obituary, Reynolds co-wrote a book with Basketball Hall of Fame member and basketball coach Rick Pitino. He was widely admired throughout New England for many years. As soon as the news of Reynolds’ death was announced on Thursday afternoon, this became evident.

Fox Sports’ John Fanta, who covers Big East basketball, tweeted, “One of the greatest basketball journalists of all time. Period. Bill Reynolds is a Rhode Island legend who influenced countless people. He was an extraordinary storyteller. R.I.P. to a legend.”

Longtime Providence Friars author Kevin McNamara wrote, “I regret to inform you that my dear friend Bill Reynolds died this morning. The themes of this memory from a few years ago still resonate true. “#Rest in Peace, Shooter”
