On Friday, August 18, Bruddah Waltah, also known as Walter Aipolani, passed away. His daughter, Aipolani Ohana, recently posted the sorrowful news on Facebook.

She mentioned in her post that the renowned musician passed away peacefully in his home in Hilo, Hawaii, surrounded by his loved ones. Since the middle of 2021, he had courageously battled a severe form of liver cancer.

Last year, Bruddah Waltah performed at a concert on Hawaii’s Big Island, demonstrating his courageous character. Other musicians organised this concert to honour him and raise funds for his medical expenses. During the event, he discussed his struggles with illness and how he was uncertain when he would be able to perform again.

Walter Aipolani, who passed away at the age of 68, was an exceptional Hawaiian vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter. In the 1980s, while performing in Waikiki, he became known as “Bruddah Waltah,” a moniker that stayed.

He was even referred to as the “Father of Hawaiian Reggae” due to his significant impact on Hawaiian-style reggae music. During the 1980s and 1990s, his band, Island Afternoon, played a significant role in making this music popular worldwide.

After a year-long battle with liver cancer, the renowned Hawaiian singer, guitarist, and songwriter Walter Aipolani passed away. His passing at age 68 marked the conclusion of his significant voyage.

In the 1980s, he rose to prominence due to his extraordinary performances in Waikiki, which earned him the appellation Bruddah Waltah.

During the thrilling 1980s and 1990s, he was a major figure in Hawaiian Reggae music and was instrumental in making Hawaiian-style reggae music known all over the world.

Last July, a special concert was held on the Big Island to honour him and raise funds. Numerous renowned Hawaiian musicians, including Mark Yamanaka and Friends, Randy Lorenzo, Ben Kaili and Friends, and others, performed.

The concert was held at the Palace Theatre in Hilo, Bruddah Waltah’s hometown, which made it even more special.

Even though he was unable to attend, his influence was felt through two compositions performed at the concert. These performances were included in a Palace Theatre video series titled “Live From the Empty Palace.”

The first was “Church in an Old Hawaiian Town,” a popular song from 1938, and the second was “To Love Somebody,” a song by The Bee Gees that demonstrated his admiration for them.
