California Bill Receives Backlash for Proposed Total Ban on Plastic Bags

California Bill Faces Criticism: Abill introduced the proposal on Thursday in the California State Legislature. However, online opposition to the bill has already begun.

California banned single-use plastic bags in 2014, mandating thicker bags for retail establishments. A recent bill, supported by Democrats, would eliminate plastic bag options. Proponents of the bill argue that this represents a positive development in environmental policy.

Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, a Democrat, introduced a measure in California’s lower house, stating that the state attempted to ban plastic bags a decade ago to reduce pollution. “Yet, these insidious relics persist, choking our waterways, imperiling wildlife, and despoiling our ecosystems.”

The bill is further supported by Democratic California State Senators Ben Allen and Catherine Blakespear.

Yesterday, state legislators issued a press release stating that environmental organizations and the California Grocers Association, a progressive statewide trade association, support the plastic bag prohibition. Senator Brian Dahle of California, among others, criticized the legislation, describing it as an instance of “government overreach.”

California Bill Faces Criticism: More About It

Dahle expressed extreme frustration with the necessity for regulation of every aspect in California while appearing on WDBD on Friday. “Specifying the type of vehicle that is required for operation, the type of straw that is permissible, and the type of lawnmower that is prohibited or permitted in California.” “From where does it emanate?”

Republican Dahle criticized the bill, citing California’s failing educational system, housing crisis, budget deficit, and high utility rates, arguing that the focus should be on resolving these issues.

The Environmental Impact of Plastic Pollution

Additional users on X opposed the proposed legislation as well. It is customary in Asian households to conserve as many plastic bags as possible, Grace Chong, CFO of the conservative political podcast War Room featuring Steve Bannon, wrote Friday afternoon. “It stinks that California exists.”

User Brynn Legree of X commented on a KTLA article regarding the measure, “This state continues to deteriorate daily.” Under the story, an additional user commented, “Enough with all this already!”

On Friday, Newsweek contacted the California state legislators responsible for the bill via email to request their comment.

There are over 500 municipalities and 12 states that have implemented statewide bans on single-use plastic bags. According to a January report by the U.S., This restriction effectively reduced plastic bag usage, pollution, and litter, according to the PIRG Education Fund.

Blakespear highlights the reduction in plastic waste caused by California’s complete ban on plastic bags.

Considering their 12-minute lifespan, sewage clogging, drinking water contamination, and toxic microplastics, California legislators are calling for their complete ban.
