Carolyn was married to Roy Bryant. Roy Bryant, a native of Mississippi, was born on January 24, 1931. He was reared by a family of cotton farmers and completed the eighth grade. Upon the outbreak of the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. military.

In Money, Mississippi, the couple eventually operated a supermarket after marrying Carolyn Bryant in 1949. Emmett Till, a 14-year-old African-American from Chicago, patronised the couple’s business in August of 1955, garnering national attention.

Emmett was abducted, tortured, and assassinated by Roy Milam and his half-brother J.W. Milam after Carolyn accused him of making sexual advances towards her. The case was widely covered by the media and is now recognised as a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.
