Columbus Day 2023: What’s Open and What’s Closed on Monday?

In observance of this, some states and municipalities have adopted the name Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Columbus Day 2023: Columbus Day is a federal holiday observed annually on the second Monday of October to honor Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer.

Historical accounts indicate that under the direction of the explorer, Columbus enslaved and mistreated the indigenous peoples who were already in the Americas when he “discovered” them. In observance of this, some states and municipalities have adopted the name Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

Due to the contentious nature of the federal holiday honoring Christopher Columbus, the majority of local governments and other public entities in this region have rescheduled the day off. The following is a summary of what is open and what is closed:

  • As post offices are closed, there will be no delivery of regular correspondence.
  • State and federal institutions are closed.
  • Garbage collection will proceed as planned, departments of the City of Columbus will remain operational, and parking meters will be reset. In 2018, the municipality ceased commemorating the holiday bearing its name and instead reallocated the paid day off to Veterans Day.
  • Since the paid holiday was rescheduled to Juneteenth by the county commissioners in 2020, Franklin County offices will remain operational.
  • The largest school district in the state, Columbus City Schools, will maintain a regular schedule for courses. The observance of Columbus Day is at the discretion of each public school district.
  • Since a few years ago, when the paid holiday was shifted to the Friday following Thanksgiving, Ohio State University remains operational.
  • Columbus State Community College is open.
  • Branches of the Columbus Metropolitan Library are accessible on the designated holiday, known as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
  • The Central Ohio Transit Authority will resume regular service on Saturdays.
