Fagen refrained from disclosing details regarding the ailment that ultimately resulted in Becker’s demise on September 3, 2017. Two days after announcing a new tour with the Steely Dan ensemble and ten days after Becker’s death, Fagen canceled the remainder of his solo tour, attributing it to an unexplained illness. Fagen had been touring with his second band, the Night Flyers, since September 24th.

Fans began to speculate what was wrong when Becker skipped Steely Dan’s high-profile summer appearances at the Classic West and Classic East stadium concerts. Becker’s ailment did not prevent Fagen or the rest of Steely Dan from performing during that time; Fagen made no public statement regarding it.
