Many people in the sports world are left wondering about the reason behind his death and thinking back on his incredible career as word of his loss spreads.

Over his career, Mortensen covered the NFL with unmatched passion and expertise, making him one of the industry’s most renowned journalists.

Throughout his career covering the Atlanta Falcons and Braves as well as his time at ESPN, Mortensen’s commitment to his craft was clear in every report he produced.

Since 2016, Chris Mortensen has been fighting cancer

Mortensen courageously battled Stage IV throat cancer for years before disclosing his diagnosis in January 2016.

Despite receiving a diagnosis, Mortensen persisted in his relentless labor, offering football fans worldwide perceptive analysis and commentary.

His ability to bounce back from hardship was an inspiration to many, proving his unshakable dedication to his work.

After covering his 33rd NFL draft, Mortensen declared his retirement in April of last year.

With his departure, ESPN and the sports broadcasting industry came to an end of an era.

Following Mortensen’s death, coworkers, acquaintances, and admirers began to post memorials.

Jimmy Pitaro, the chairman of ESPN, stated in a statement that “Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and universally beloved as a supportive, hard-working teammate.”

“He was at the top of his field for decades, covering the NFL with incredible skill and devotion. Colleagues and admirers alike will sincerely miss him, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Regarding Mortensen, coworker Mike Greenberg said he was “one of the kindest, most generous gentlemen you could ever come across, in any field.”

He continued, noting, “His enthusiasm and good nature made him everyone’s friend; his professionalism and decency earned him universal admiration.” His influence on those of us fortunate enough to know him well will last a lifetime, and his legacy in the industry will endure for a very long time. Peace be with you, Mort. We shall always cherish our memories of you.”

Chris Mortensen’s love for the NFL, commitment to his job, and unflinching professionalism have left an enduring impression on the sports broadcasting industry, even as the league continues to mourn his loss.
