Andrews switched from wide receiver to tight end while attending Oklahoma. After redshirting his rookie season in 2014, he played in all 13 games with one start in 2015 and finished with 19 receptions for 318 yards and seven touchdowns. In the 13 games he started in 2016, Andrews caught 31 catches for 489 yards and seven touchdowns.
2017 saw him win the John Mackey Award. It was announced in early January 2018 that Andrews would forego his senior year at Oklahoma in favour of the 2018 NFL Draught. Andrews concluded his three years at Oklahoma with the sixth-most touchdown receptions (22) of all receivers and the most receiving yards (1,765) of all tight ends.
On January 4, 2018, Andrews decided to forgo his remaining eligibility and declare for the 2018 NFL Draught. Andrews attended the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and completed all of the positional drills. Analysts and scouts lauded his overall performance as being good.
On March 14, 2018, Andrews participated at Oklahoma’s pro day, however he decided to rely solely on his combine statistics and take part in positional drills. After the pre-draft process was over, pundits and scouts for the NFL believed Andrews would be taken in the second round.
