After a physical altercation escalated outside the student centre on campus, a gunshot occurred Friday night on this campus, injuring one person.
Campus shooting at UNC-Chapel Hill: Monday afternoon, a graduate student purportedly shot and killed a faculty member at UNC-Chapel Hill, according to university officials and police. The campus was locked down for several hours as a result.
Monday afternoon, Tailei Qi, a graduate student in applied physical sciences, was taken into custody. Formal charges are forthcoming, authorities said at a Monday evening press conference.
As university officials and police laboured to notify the decedent’s family, they did not identify the deceased faculty member.
The police have not determined a motive, but Qi’s tweets exhibited anger, tension, and depression. This year and last, he made a series of ambiguous remarks about conflicts with other students and his “PI” or principal investigator, who is typically a university-assigned faculty member who supervises student research projects.
2022 Marks the Highest Annual Suicides In The US: A Deep Dive!!
“Just feel my privacy has been violated,” Qi tweeted on July 18, 2022:
“When I labour, I will believe that I am demonstrating to my boss that I am working rather than pursuing my interests, thereby devaluing the significance of my work. This is so revolting. Self-respect hinders my ability to perform. Then it is difficult to persuade myself that my actions are motivated solely by pleasure.”
On August 1, he posted:
“Bullying appears to be a concern in America. It frequently results from people not halting them the first time. Explanation is not a solution, but it gives them the impression that others will plead their case every time they bring up a problem, causing them to seek out excuses day and night.
On August 18, 2022, he posted another enigmatic message regarding a conflict involving his PI and students:
“Just speak with my PI and obtain his assurance. He should have more expertise dealing with these girls and snitching individuals. Then, we can simply move on from this ridiculous topic. Let’s simply concentrate on nature. If no changes are required, I will not make any.”
In October of 2022, he posted vaguely about conflicts with his PI and other students:
“Both the group of people to say I am lazy and that to prove me working hard instead of telling me that they are trying to consume my privacy,” he wrote on Oct 31. “I believe their motivation is solely to inform my PI and then control me through rumor-mongering.”
However, it’s strange when I discuss it with my PI, he wrote. “He reported that no one spoke to him about that. So it’s just voyeurism for these individuals?”
In another ambiguous post dated 30 May of this year, Qi appeared to express frustration with his workplace:
“These kinds of people may be good men, but they may not be sincere friends,” he wrote. “It is childish for a Ph.D. student to devote so much attention to working time every day…I am aware that many people want me to show them working and working, but that would be inhumane.”
In June of this year, he published a series of ambiguous derogatory posts about women.
On June 5 he posted,
“Many counterintuitive situations in society: minimum wage hurts the poor more than it helps; gender quotas do not protect women but increase discrimination.”
“When this type of girl does her ‘best’ to beg others to ‘help’ me, everyone looks down on me,” he wrote on June 12 evening. “A sort of angelic whore.”
Several tweets preceding it were purged, depriving it of context.
He posted on July 31 that he wanted to make new acquaintances.
“Would like to make some new friends,” he wrote. “I am a second-year PhD candidate with an interest in nanoparticle synthesis, optical entrapment, self-assembly, spectral analysis, and machine learning. A little naive in daily trivialities, but extremely enthusiastic when discussing research. Contact me if interested.”
On the same day, he published a solitary, cryptic question: “What is truth?”
Monday at approximately 1:00 p.m., the university sent an Alert Carolina message to the campus community following reports of gunfire at Caudill Labs, which contains chemistry labs. The campus cancelled all classes and events, including a special Board of Trustees meeting of UNC-Chapel Hill.
As police searched for the shooter, students, faculty, and staff took cover in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and dorms, turning off lights and barricading doors.
At 2:35 p.m., university police issued a photograph of Qi and identified him as a person of interest.According to UNC-Chapel Hill police, a different individual who was not involved in the shooting was initially taken into custody on Monday but later released. According to a statement from UNC Police, Qi was taken into custody at 2:31 p.m. along Williams Circle about a mile from campus.
Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz stated at the press conference, “This is truly a time for the community to come together.” “These tragic incidents are occurring throughout our nation. This is why we prepare and discuss community spirit. My sympathies and prayers are with the victim’s family, friends, coworkers, and students in that department at this time.”
Early in the afternoon, UNC Hospitals was placed on isolation, but a hospital spokesperson stated that they had not received any patients with injuries related to the incident. The quarantine of the hospital was lifted shortly before 4 p.m., and police issued a “all clear.”
After the lockdown was lifted, police and FBI agents were on campus, searching the Caudill Labs area, where a bullet wound was visible in a window.
James stated at the press conference, “We train for this day.” However, we pray it never occurs.
On campus, the second week of the autumn semester began on Monday. Tuesday’s classes have been suspended.
Monday, Guskiewicz told students, “I’m sorry that so many of you are currently uncertain about your safety.” “Excellent protocols are in place. There is nothing more essential on our campus than the safety of our community members, and our nearly 30,000 students and faculty and staff are at the top of that list.”
“We’re here for you,” Guskiewicz stated. “I implore you to utilise any and all resources you may require. We will work as a community to assure your safety and the safety of all visitors to our Chapel Hill campus.”
The deadly shooting at UNC-Chapel Hill occurred just days after a shooting at N.C. A&T University in Greensboro.
After a physical altercation escalated outside the student centre on campus, a gunshot occurred Friday night on this campus, injuring one person. Up to ten gunshots were reported to the authorities. Though campus officials and police stated that students were not involved in the on-campus incident, Chancellor Harold Martin announced that the university is increasing police patrols and implementing a new policy that allows police to remove undesirable individuals from campus.
