FIR against quack in Palamu over death of patient

An FIR of wrongful death has been lodged against a quack identified as Sanoj Goswami with the Chhaterpur police station in Palamu district on Saturday.

Officer in-charge of the Chhaterpur police station Shekhar Kumar when questioned regarding the same said, “The FIR has been lodged by the deceased’s wife Arti Devi against the quack Sanoj Goswami. She has named him and accused him of causing death to her husband Hemant Kumar.”

Police officer Shekhar Kumar said we have registered the case and the hunt is on to nab this quack who has gone into hiding.

Shekhar Kumar said the bereaved family of Kumar informed the local Chhaterpur police quite late else he could have been arrested on Saturday itself.

Notably, Hemant Kumar was an employee of a private finance company and hailed from Nawa, Jaipur. On Saturday Kumar went to Goswami for treatment of a cut near his right thumb. The quack administered a couple of injections which worsened his condition.  Kumar was then rushed to the sub divisional hospital Chhaterpur the same morning.

Doctor of the sub divisional hospital M Jawed Akhtar said, “This patient was brought to our sub divisional hospital around 8.30 in the morning of Saturday. He had an extremely high blood pressure 249/190. We took all possible measures to make Kumar stable but he was getting restless and fidgety as time passed.”

Dr Jawed said the patient’s attendant showed him a scribbling prescription wherein details of the injections given by the quack were written. The administered injections were Xon 1gm, Avil, Dexona and Primacot.

“The patient and attendant were advised to move the patient to the MMCH Daltonganj. We had referred this case well in time too,” the doctor added.

Sources said that before the patient could have been shifted, he died in the sub divisional hospital. The medical officer-in-charge at the hospital Dr Rajesh Agrawal said, “Our doctor on duty in the hospital did all for the patient but in vain.”

Dr Dilip Kumar Singh, the medical superintendent of MMCH said that post mortem of Kumar was conducted by senior doctor Sanjay Kumar. Dr Kumar, who performed the post mortem said his viscera has been preserved for further examination in Ranchi. He refused to make any further comments about it.

Notably, just a few days ago, a high-level team of NHRC in Ranchi had asked the state government to curb and contain the malpractices committed by the quacks; which take a toll in terms of human lives.

Sources said there are a couple of quacks in every village here and there is no measure that exists to contain them. Police and legal actions start against them only when there is the death of a patient.
