According to the office of Governor Ron DeSantis, Duane Owen was administered a lethal injection at the Florida State Prison and pronounced deceased at 6:14 p.m. Owen was 23 years old when the assaults occurred and 62 years old when he was executed. He was one of the longest-serving death row offenders in Florida.
Owen declined to provide a final comment. At 6:01 p.m., as the sedative began to take effect, Owen’s respiration became heavier and his arms trembled. Before administering Owen’s lethal dose, the warden ensured that he was incapacitated.
Owen was sentenced to death for the rape and murder stabbing of 14-year-old Karen Slattery on March 24, 1984, and for the rape and lethal hammer attack on 38-year-old Georgianna Worden two months later. Both homicides occurred in Palm Beach County.
Owen allegedly assaulted two other females who survived in Palm Beach County. Before and after Owen’s 23rd birthday, all four assaults occurred. Owen was one of the 290 inmates on Florida’s death row who was there the longest.
In addition to his death sentence, he received six life sentences. Several members of the victims’ families witnessed the execution. No one in the witness room commented, but Slattery’s younger sister, Debbi Johnson, sitting in the front row, referred to Owen as a coward after the execution.
