Experts tell Fox News that the discovery of Gabby Petito’s remains in a Wyoming campsite last month during an investigation headed by the FBI suggests that domestic violence and murderous intent were likely factors. Her autopsy revealed that she was strangled to death.

Her fiance, Brian Laundrie, has been identified as a person of interest in her murder, and a federal bank card fraud warrant has been issued for his arrest. Brian and she camped together before he drove alone back to Florida and ultimately vanished.

According to Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue, Petito was killed by “manual strangulation/throttling,” which means she was murdered by hand as opposed to with a rope or chain.

According to Dr. Dan Field, a board-certified emergency physician who has testified as an expert witness in homicide and strangulation cases, murdering someone by strangulation requires time and planning.

“I testified in a murder case in Florida where the defense attempted to present the theory that it was a moment of passion,” he told Fox News Digital. “I was asked how long it takes for strangulation to kill someone.”

“The numbers are extremely precise.” He estimated that it took between 62 and 157 seconds. “And then the prosecution’s question is, does 62 seconds sound like a’moment of passion’?” he said.

Timeline of the Gabby Petito Case: What Happened To Her?

The couple embarked on a cross-country journey in June 2021, according to North Port Police Chief Todd Garrison, who refers to Laundrie as Petito’s fiancée. Garrison stated at a press conference that they planned to travel to the West Coast in Petito’s white Ford van and visit state and national parks throughout the western United States. He stated that she was excited to share her voyage on social media with her family and others.

During her travels, she maintained regular communication with her family, but that abruptly ceased at the end of August, according to the police superintendent.

When authorities in Moab, Utah encountered the pair on August 12, they reportedly “engaged in some sort of altercation.” Officer Eric Pratt reported that despite the fact that the two allegedly engaged in a physical altercation after an argument, “both the male and female reported they are in love and engaged to be married and desperately did not want to see anyone charged with a crime.”

According to the report, which described Petito as “confused and emotional,” the officers advised the couple to separate for the evening. “After evaluating the totality of the circumstances, I do not believe that the situation escalated to the level of a domestic assault so much as a mental health crisis.”There were no complaints lodged.

  • According to the report, both individuals carried cell phones for use in an emergency. The Grand County Sheriff’s Office has a 911 audio recording from that day in which a caller reporting a domestic dispute described a white van with a Florida license plate.
  • The caller asserted that, as they passed, “the gentleman was slapping the girl.” “Then we stopped,” continued the caller. As they ran, they traversed the sidewalk. He subsequently struck her before fleeing in his car.
  • According to Laundrie’s family counsel, Steven Bertolino, on August 17 Laundrie flew from Salt Lake City to Tampa, Florida.
  • According to CNN’s Bertolino, Laundrie “flew home to retrieve some items and empty and close the storage unit in an effort to save money as they considered extending the road trip.”
  • On August 23, Laundrie returned to Salt Lake City to reunite with Petito, according to the attorney, who added, “To the best of my knowledge, Brian and Gabby paid for the flights as they were sharing expenses.”
  • Brian travels back to Florida on September 1 without Gabby.
  • Gabby’s parents contacted Suffolk County police on September 11 regarding their daughter’s disappearance.
  • Brian’s family asserts in a statement dated September 14 that he has retained counsel and will not assist investigators.
  • Grand Teton National Park has a body, according to Wyoming authorities on September 19. The FBI believed that the body was Gabby’s, but a comprehensive forensic identification is required to be certain.
  • When police search Laundrie’s home on September 20, they seize his silver Mustang and a hard drive that may contain “evidence relevant to proving that a felony has been committed.”
  • The authorities announce on September 21 that they will conduct an autopsy to ascertain whether the remains discovered in Wyoming belong to Gabby. The next location where police resumed their search for Laundrie was the Venice side of Carlton Reserve. The FBI verified on September 21 that the body discovered in Wyoming was that of Gabby.
  • The police continue to scour Carlton Reserve for Laundrie on September 22, but have found no leads. A specialized diving crew is needed to assist with the search.
  • Authorities announced on September 23 that a federal arrest warrant has been issued for Brian.
  • The results of Gabby’s autopsy were disclosed on October 12. Dr. Brent Blue, the Teton County coroner, determined that Gabby was strangled to death.

How Did Her Family React?

In a recent interview about the day they learned of their daughter’s death, Gabby’s parents stated that they continue to hold out hope that Brian is alive. According to Gabby’s father Joe, Brian “didn’t tell us” that he returned to his home in North Port with her van and without Gabby.

Memorial for Gabby

The city of North Port is still in the process of designing a permanent memorial to Gabby. In the days following Gabby’s abduction, the neighborhood responded by sending flowers, photographs, and other mementos to the City Center Front Green, erecting a temporary memorial.

The majority of the items were collected by Gabby’s family over the duration of a week. Tuesday, the city will remove the remaining debris. In time, the city will replace these items with a Gabby-dedicated steel settee.

On Monday, it had been exactly one month since Gabby’s family filed a missing person report, stating that they had been unable to contact her for more than a week while she was cross-country traveling with Brian. A week later, on September 19, her body was located.

The month has been difficult, per Gabby’s parents.
