Gaddar Cause Of Death: Gaddar, a revolutionary balladeer and renowned folk vocalist, died in a private hospital in Hyderabad on August 6 while being treated for a heart-related illness.
Gaddar, who was born as Gummadi Vithal Rao in Toopran, Medak district, in 1949, is well-known for his revolutionary compositions in the two Telugu states. His contribution to people’s movements in Andhra Pradesh at the height of the Naxal movement earned him cult status among the Telugu-speaking population.
His role in the Telangana movement cannot be forgotten, and his iconic song, Podustunna Poddu Meeda Nadustunna Kaalama Poru Telanganama, was played at every Telangana movement meeting. He was ideologically aligned with Telangana’s aspirations and used his music to reach the populace and expose the region’s injustice. He also appeared in a handful of films, including “Maa Bhoomi,” in which he sang the popular song “Bandenka Bandi Katti Padahaaru Bandlu Katti.”
In the 1980s, Gaddar spent the peak of his youth labouring underground for the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) People’s War. However, he emerged from hibernation when the then-chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, Marri Chenna Reddy, lifted the prohibition on the People’s War group. In 1997, he evaded an assassination attempt at his residence.
Recently, he was spotted at the Telangana Congress meeting in Khammam, where Rahul Gandhi was present. He was observed embracing Rahul Gandhi and wishing him well. A few months ago, he proclaimed the formation of a new political party, but he died before it could take off.
A. Revanth Reddy, president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee, expressed his condolences for the passing of Gaddar and stated that his music and influence on social movements in Telangana will always be cherished and remembered.
