Google Doodle Honours Kamala Sohonie: Who was she? Why she is so Famous?
She is the first woman admitted to the esteemed Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Her fellowship application was initially denied by the director of IISc, who had doubts about her scientific abilities. However, due to her perseverance, determination, and resolve, she made it to the IISc despite numerous obstacles. One of the conditions was that she be placed on probation for the first year until the director of the institution deemed her work worthy of continuing.
Dr C.V. Raman, who was the director of IISC at the time, was extremely impressed by Kamala Sohonie’s commitment and work ethic, and he granted her permission to continue conducting research at the institute. After Sohonie, it is believed that the IISc began admitting more female candidates in subsequent years.
Sohonie received a research fellowship to pursue her Ph.D. at Cambridge University in 1937. She accomplished her thesis on Cytochrome C, the enzyme responsible for energy production, in a record-setting 14 months. After returning to India, Kamala Sohonie continued her research on developing affordable and healthful nutritional supplements.
Dr Sohonie received the Rashtrapati Award for her research on Neera, a source of vitamin C that has been shown to enhance the health of malnourished children and pregnant women. In addition to her many accomplishments, she is the first female director of the Royal Institute of Science in Bombay.
In 1998, Kamala Sohonie passed away.
