Health Concerns for Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell: What Happened to him?

Harwell was transported to the hospital in August 2016 after collapsing following a performance in Urbana, Illinois.

Health Concerns for Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell: The manager of the rock band Smash Mouth stated on Sunday that the band’s former lead vocalist, Steve Harwell, was receiving hospice care at his residence.

Harwell’s health has swiftly declined since he turned 56, and his remaining time is likely to be brief. His fiancée has stood by his side during this extremely trying time. Out of respect for him and his family, Harwell’s management declined to provide additional information about his health.

Harwell’s contributions to Smash Mouth as a band leader and founding member are highly regarded. Two of the group’s songs, “All-Star” and “I’m a Believer,” were international successes and catapulted them to fame.

Health Concerns for Smash Mouth’s Steve Harwell

The renowned former lead vocalist of Smash Mouth, Steve Harwell, is currently receiving hospice care at home. After receiving medical care, EW is able to determine that Harwell’s liver failure is in its final phases. Harwell has returned home with “only a week or so to live,” as confirmed by the band’s spokesman, and his loved ones have been visiting him for the past three days.

Harwell was transported to the hospital in August 2016 after collapsing following a performance in Urbana, Illinois. Due to Harwell’s cardiac condition, Smash Mouth had to postpone several 2017 performances.

Due to health issues, the lead singer of the San Jose, California rock band, whose 1990s hits included “All-Star” and “Walking on the Sun,” departed in 2021. Zach Goode, previously of Ghoulspoon, Divided By Zero, and The Secret Seven, is the band’s new main vocalist.

Since being diagnosed with cardiomyopathy a decade ago, Harwell has endured a series of medical setbacks, including heart failure and acute Wernicke’s encephalopathy, which affects motor abilities including speech and memory. In the past, the musician has also struggled with alcoholism.

Harwell resigned following his controversial performance in upstate New York. The internet was flooded with videos of Harwell stuttering and making menacing noises towards the audience.

According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Harwell “forgot where he was and his own lyrics and had a limited understanding of his surroundings as a result of one of his episodes.” They continued by stating that the audio is “unfortunate” and does not represent him. A few days after the event, Harwell announced his retirement.
