Collins applied for a graduate trainee program with the McLaren Formula One racing team after completing the Formula Student program, but before she graduated in 2009, after seeing an advertisement for it in the Mechanical Engineering department of Queen’s University.

She took advantage of the opportunity to tour the McLaren Technology Centre, despite her initial reservations regarding the apprenticeship. In 2009, Collins was admitted to the program after completing a series of online tests and quizzes.
